Operative/Speculate
Which Are We?
By Definition:
Operative: Engaged in some branch of work.
Speculative: Pertaining to the theoretical rather than the practical.
Again, which are we? Our ancient brethren worked in operative as well in speculative Masonry. As modern Masons do we not follow in their footsteps? It is true that we no longer build cathedrals and monuments of stone, but as individuals, when we become a Mason and a member of a Lodge, unknowingly, we are starting to lay the groundwork for our own "Speculative" edifice.
This does not happen by chance, for each of the Degrees imparts its own particular message to the individual Brother. If he takes the time to interpret and understand these messages, he will find that they have been formed to inculcate certain valuable truths with that purpose of Masonry which is "to make good men better." While this is not a definitive thing that can be measured in finite terms, it is rather a "speculative" way of life that will carry out of the Lodge and form the basis of our daily lives.
Using the Lodge duties as an example, when a Brother becomes an officer he realizes that although it may not happen every communication, sooner or later, he will be called upon to become an "operative" Mason and perform the work dictated by his particular office, and without realizing it, he is also developing those intangible qualities that are setting a solid foundation for what is to follow.
Yes, as modern Masons we do work in "operative" as well as "speculative" Masonry.
Fraternally,
