Dear Brethren,

Recently the Grand Lodge of the State of New Jersey conducted a one day class. It was not the first one day class, and certainly not the last, but probably the largest and most publicized class held in this Grand Jurisdiction. While the efforts of the Grand Lodge to increase membership in the Fraternity are a noble and necessary to insure our survival, we must remember that Freemasonry is not, and never was intended to be, all inclusive. We are instructed in the Entered Apprentice Charge that should someone in our circle of acquaintances wish to become a Mason, we are not to recommend him unless we are sure that he will conform to our regulations. Before recommending a man for membership in the Craft, either by a one day class or long form, consider whether he will be a benefit to the Fraternity. The number of men Raised at this past one day class was quite encouraging, but I cannot help but wonder how many of those men completed their Mason Mason examinations and are active members of their Lodges. If North Arlington Lodge is typical for the completion and retention of these new members, I suspect that the numbers are quite low. I believe that there is a certain mindset required to be a true Mason, one that allows brothers to lay aside their differences and work together to accomplish common goals. Remember Brethren, Freemasonry is not for everyone.

Fraternally,
James T. Lind
