Dear Brethren,

Freemasonry - the world's oldest and largest fraternal organization - a secret society. Is Freemasonry truly a secret society? I think not. We meet in the light of day, display insignias on our cars, and make no attempt to conceal our identity while entering or leaving the temple. Perhaps the word “private” would be a more appropriate word to describe our fraternity. The term “secret society” has cast suspicion on our institution through its existence. We have all heard the conspiracy theories accusing Masons of designs to control the government and business world, and it is human nature to be suspicious of anything secret. How then do we defend our reputation against those who believe that there is a sinister intent in our hearts? The answer is quite simple: while the rituals we share are kept to ourselves, the actions of the Lodge and its individual members make our goals and intentions clear. Freemasonry has always been an organization dedicated to helping others in need, both Mason and non Mason alike, on a local scale such as donations to police and fire departments, and in larger undertakings, as in the relief efforts of natural disasters such as hurricane Katrina. Our conduct in the public eye is our best defense against our detractors. Remember Brethren, “never suffer your zeal for the Institution to lead you into argument with those who, through ignorance, may ridicule it.”

Fraternally,
